The autobiographical narrative tells the story of the life of Obama up to his entry in Harvard Law School. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Obama, Sr. of Kenya, and Ann Dunham of Wichita, Kansas, who had met as students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Obama's parents separated when he was two years old and divorced in 1964. Obama's father went to Harvard to pursue his Ph. D, but he didn't have the money to take his family with him. After that, he returned to Africa to fulfill his promise to the continent. Obama formed an image of his absent father from stories told by his mother and her parents. He saw his father only one more time, in 1971, when Obama Sr. came to Hawaii for a month's visit.[4] The elder Obama died in a car accident in 1982.[4]
After her divorce, Ann Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, an East-West Center student from Indonesia. The family moved to Jakarta. When Obama was ten, he returned to Hawaii under the care of his grandparents (and later his mother) for the better educational opportunities available there. He was enrolled in the fifth grade at Punahou School, a private college-preparatory school, where he was one of only six black students at the mostly white school.[5]
Obama attended Punahou School from the 5th grade until his graduation in 1979. Obama writes: "For my grandparents, my admission into Punahou Academy heralded the start of something grand, an elevation in the family status that they took great pains to let everyone know." There he also met Ray (Keith Kakugawa), who introduced him to the African American community.[6]
Upon finishing high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles, where he enrolled at Occidental College, where he describes living a "party" lifestyle of drug and alcohol use.[7][8][9] After two years at Occidental, he transferred to Columbia College at Columbia University, in Manhattan, New York City, where he majored in political science.[9] Upon graduation, he worked for a year in business. He then moved to Chicago, working for a non-profit doing community organizing in the Altgeld Gardens housing project on the city's South Side. Obama recounts the difficulty of the experience, as his program faced resistance from entrenched community leaders and apathy on the part of the established bureaucracy. It was during his time spent here that Obama first visited Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ.[9]
Before attending Harvard Law School, Obama decided to visit relatives in Kenya. He uses part of his experience there as the setting for the book's final, emotional scene.
As well as relating the story of Obama's life, the book includes a good deal of reflection on his own personal experiences with race and race relations in the United States.

You should read President Obama's DREAMS FROM MY FATHER. He wrote it when he was a nobody--a state senator.
It is a beaituflly done piece of literature. He has a gift for words. His powers of observation are astute.
His mom wasn't running away from anything. She loved her parents and made sure they were actively involved in her children's lives. Young BArack grew up with his grandparents--so they were not racists at all. they welcomes Barack's father into the family.
She was kind of a hippie free spirit who loved to travel and learn abourt new cultures.
You would have liked her!!!

I think he left because... Like Rev Wright said.... He's a Politician... President Barack saw the election slipping away... so he had to make a choice... derail Wright and win the election.....
I think he saw the Presidency as the GOLDEN Egg... and it meant more to him than his loyalty to Wright...
Did you ever find out the questions about Obama's mother?
She was very intelligent... Very... and she was somewhat radical... In Barack's book he talks about his mother's childhood... growing up in a middle class white neighborhood.. and how she had befriended this young black girl in her class... She lost all of her friends because she kept her friendship with her.
She was defiant... she went against the rules.. so quite naturally, her family did not accept this African... BUT when her parents found out that she was pregnant with their first grandchild.... everything changed.. Barack talked about him mother as being this feminist... protesting for everything.. equal rights, womens rights...
After she divorced Barack Sr,
.... She married Lolo, Asian descent... Again against the norm... They moved to Jarkata... in Indonesia... He talks about the monkeys as pets... and eating locust ... yuk and his life in Indonisia and his love of basketball....

The puropse of my mentioning Rev. Jackson is that most believe that he was poor...that man has never been in a poor family his life...he was born and raised in a middle-class family and went to a 'private' college ...
and this also has a lot to do with why I will say every now and then how "I" have no respect for him and it is for the same reason Mrs. M.L. King had no respect for rev. J. Jackson (nupa nd smile)

Cynthia, that what you said about ourr president's mother is similar to what happened to my friend only it was her mother who tramatized her for having a black friend.she was constantly called ***** lover so she left home at 15 and moved in with a black family and to tis day she does not like whte people. She has never dated a whit eman.
NOw about the words that came out of our president's mouth about why he left is church,...He said he left to protect his friends and members who were about to loose their jobs and so those wh wee sick in the hospital could be there in peace...in other words he left to protect these people.
He kept saying he could no more leave rev. J.W. than he could leae the Black community. I will tell you later why these people really went aftet Trinity. It is a lot like the Mosque in N.Y. issue which actually comes out of this they believe they won by getting the public to believe those made up lies about our president so now they can continue this behavior. (smile)

...sorry...eh was talking aobut how the press sending their reporters at all times of day and night to camp out in the church members private lives had to come to an end is why he left his church with is body but not his mind and spirit and his faith...but you see they still refuse to call our president a Christian after all he did to please those on teh right and protect his church and its mamers and as he said his friends as well as church members and apologized and sai dhe hope they are stillhis firends after all of this happening to them taht was beyond their control....
a lot like all blacks steal..lol(smile)
