Deeper Communication (1219 hits)

Communication is a little deeper than sharing words and ideas, because it also involves understanding and being understood.

There are times that we attempt to communicate, reach out to someone, and feel like the other person did not understand, hear or relate to anything that we just said. What we sometimes overlook is that the other person might feel the exact same way that we are feeling.

Everyone feels that their point is valid and sometimes hear the sounds of another person's voice, but the only words that they feel are the words that valid to them...their own words and feelings.

We are sometimes required to respond to others when we are communicating with other people, but there are also times that we need to learn and practice the art of silence. We need to hear every word, and make sure that we have a full understanding of what a person is trying to tell us. Look, listen, and learn.

"If you listen to a person long enough, they will tell you exactly whats on their mind."

Greet the world this morning and truly understand the response you get.

SG

Once a human being has arrived on this earth, communication is the largest single factor determining what kinds of relationships he makes with others and what happens to him in the world about him."

-- Virginia Satir

How do you typically communicate? Is it through words, gestures, emotions, thoughts, desires, needs, truths, direct perception or intuition? Do you focus more on the other person or on yourself? Do you typically tell, ask or listen?

For a few days, set an intention to be aware of your communication styles and skills. After you・ve spent some time talking with someone, reflect on what your underlying motives were and what level of depth you reached.

"We need people in our lives with whom we can be as open as possible. To have real conversation with people may seem like such a simple, obvious suggestion, but it involves courage and risk."

-- Thomas Moore

"You must speak straight so that your words may go as sunlight to our hearts."

-- Cochise

It's at those times when we sometimes think others are saying nothing that they are saying everything we need to know... Active listening means not spending time thinking of what your response will be while another person is speaking but actually hearing what that person is saying then thinking and responding appropriately once they're done.
